Seven budding bands will battle it out to be named the Sefton Streetwaves champion.

The final of the Sefton leg on the Streetwaves competition takes place at Southport Arts Centre on Saturday, June 28, at 7.30pm.

Following a series of heats, seven bands have been chosen to take part in the final. The Sefton winner will compete against acts from other Merseyside areas with the winners getting the chance to perform at several high-profile events including Creamfields and the Mathew Street Festival.

The Sefton finalists are:

* 9.0.9 - Four childhood friends who formed a band together almost a year ago and have since gone on to play at Liverpool venues as the Cavern Club and Barfly and were named winners of the Bootle Music Festival.

* Scuba Steve and the Life Aquatics are a band from Formby, who have been together for six months. They say "We gave ourselves a stupid name to see if people would still take the music seriously, because we think music is based to much on face value right now".

* Radio Transplant are a soft rock band all from Birkdale High School who have been together for almost two years. The line-up is lead guitarist Josh McLeod; rhythm guitarist Tom Ford; Russel Johnson on drums, bassist Oliver Willcocks and singer Steve Wright.

* Scars of a Bullet are an indie/alternate band and have been going for about a year. The trio - drummer Sean Radcliff, guitarist Stephen Brannigan and bassist Chris Lawson - write their own original material. Stephen and Chris both do vocals.

* Harrison Drive were formed in autumn 2006, and first took to the stage in October of that year at the Barfly in Liverpool. The band recently completed the recording of their debut E.P at Parr Street studios in Liverpool, produced by Andrea Wright (Coldplay's Parachutes, and A Rush Of Blood to the Head). Harrison Drive are Ben Jones, Ben Huyton, Jack Wade and Mikey Ryan.

* Outcast Youth is an up and coming rapper earning critical acclaim for his powerful and poetic lyrics. Outcast Youth has been described as 'A breath of fresh air...a rapper who doesnt talk about being a gangster'.

* Epydemyk are a five-piece alternative band from Crosby, who have funk and rock influences to make their own style. They won Sefton Youth Battle of the Bands 2008 and play many gigs across Liverpool.

Suzy Walker, Sefton's Community Arts Co-ordinator, said: "We have seen some fantastic young musicians in Sefton over the last couple of years and this event will be a real treat for music fans.

"Through projects such as Polyphonic Jacklead and Streetwaves, we have seen some excellent bands take to the stage to entertain their peers - and everyone has had a great time.

"I'm sure the Streetwaves final will be just as exciting and it will be a very tough decision for the judges as all of the bands taking part are very talented."

Tickets for the event are £5, available from Southport Arts Centre, Lord Street, by calling the box office on 01705-540011 or by logging onto www.seftonarts.co.uk
