Electric guitar tutors could soon become 'professional teachers' when recognised diploma courses are launched later this year.
The scheme has been backed by Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour.
The Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT) has just launched a series of three fully
accredited specialist Diplomas for electric guitar teachers.
RGT Director Tony Skinner said: "Although recognised teaching diplomas for classical guitarists have been available for many years, up until now there has been no equivalent range of specialist qualifications designed specifically for electric guitarists.
"RGT is very pleased to be able to offer electric guitar teachers the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification."
The diplomas have been designed to reflect the specific skills needed by electric guitar teachers teaching rock and other styles of popular music. Whilst playing ability needs to be sufficient to ably demonstrate
musical examples and techniques to students, the focus in the diplomas is the ability to 'teach' electric guitar.
The diplomas have been developed by the RGT whose Board of Patrons includes some of
the popular music world's most respected figures including Sir Paul McCartney, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones.
The exams will be available from October 2008. RGT will be holding a seminar at London's Thames Valley University on November 16 to provide information and support for anyone considering taking one of the new
diplomas.
