Featured local band: DC and the Customatix

By John Siddle on Dec 11, 07 11:48 AM

"Martin Hovden misspelt us and made us sound like DC and the Custard Mix," said guitarist Pete Custom. Hats off the The Champion's music guru, he may have inadvertantly stumbled across the best band name ever.

Pete Custom, of Southport's newest oldest band tell Open Mic how they came to form:

"We've all played in bands for years, from the late 70s to recent times," said Pete. "Our aim is to bring new Rockabilly songs to a new audience as well as an established one, Rockabilly doesn't just live in the 50's!

"There are four of us in the band; Ash on drums, DC on bass, Diane on vocals and me on guitar

"We're very much into the 50s music scene; a rnb, jazzy, bluesy sound.

"We've been playing for a year to get to this stage. Just writing stuff and practicing it. We had terrible problems getting a vocalist, and then we found Diane.

"She's absolutely spot-on. She writes lyrics as well, so we share the songwriting."

They held their first gig last weekend, a charity fundraisier at the Blundell Arms, Birkdale, and the Customatix showed "bands young enough to be our kids" their footstomping intepretation of rock and roll.

Sons of Mod, Blitzkrieg, Sourmash and Dirty Little Tricks were amongst others that helped raise over £1000 for charity.

DC and the Customatics are currently looking to book gigs in the Southport area. Contact them on MySpace.

Did you catch DC and The Customatix at the Blundell Arms? What did you make of them?

Been on the Myspace- sounds good to me.

Good to hear the Dr Feelgood influence, the epitome of pub rock and sadly overlooked. Their live album Stupidity (75) deserves a place in all rockers' collections.
